The Deadman Fuzz is a hybrid silicon and germanium fuzz, low in gain and responsive enough to follow your picking hand. One knob takes it from a dark, warm clean to a thick, sustaining fuzz with the long, slow decay the pedal is named for.

Monochrome Noir MK III is a limited edition of the Deadman built around low and ultra-low gain. Across most of the knob’s travel it lives closer to overdrive than to fuzz, and only at maximum does it turn into fuzz: softer than the regular version, with a bigger grain.

This is the MK III Anniversary Series Deadman Fuzz Monochrome Noir. We release versions like this only once every 2–3 years, in a limited production run, available only on our website.

HANDMADE ARTWORK

For Monochrome, we created several art pieces and applied one of the patterns to the MK III. Each pedal is hand-painted in a custom monochrome scheme with extensive handmade detailing.

LOW GAIN CHARACTER

Softer and warmer sound. The low-gain character brings a slightly bigger grain of distortion, greater dynamics and a more sensitive response. More overdrive, more feel, less high gain.

TRUE VINTAGE TONE

Monochrome Noir keeps everything that makes a regular Deadman Fuzz special.

Every Deadman Fuzz runs our custom hybrid silicon and germanium circuit. Each component does what it does best, and that is the whole point of the hybrid.

For the MK III we matched low-gain and ultra-low-gain transistor pairs. Two vintage European-made germanium transistors with low hFE handle saturation, clipping and spectrum shaping. Two silicon transistors with ultra-low hFE handle amplification and keep the attack soft. Low hFE means less gain per transistor, which is where the gentle, dynamic response comes from.

AUTHENTIC FUZZ VOICING

The special arrangement of the germanium stages gives a saturation you will not find in a standard Muff circuit.

At minimum, Monochrome Noir gives you a clean sound with coloration already in place. Turn up to low and mid settings and it shifts toward light preamp-style breakup and soft overdrive. Around the middle, a low-gain fuzz character appears, with a bigger grain and more overdrive. At maximum, it works like a vintage mid-gain fuzz with a distinct emphasis on the mids and upper mids.

The ultra-low-gain first stages and softer clipping also make Monochrome Noir react better to dynamics and picking touch.

TONE, TUNING & ART

The Low Cut knob shapes the tone. Turn it one way and the low end pulls back while the top gently opens up. Turn it the other way and bass and gain build together while the highs roll off softly. Use it to balance the pedal’s many voices.

This version is slightly retuned to keep the sonic concept and reach an optimal vintage low- and mid-gain fuzz, while the regular version leans toward more gain and saturation.
